Your wife is not your SLAVE but your PARTNER.
To Christian husbands who treat their wives like slaves, God Himself called your wife your PARTNER in Malachi 2:14: "You cry out, “Why doesn’t the LORD accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is YOUR PARTNER, the wife of your marriage covenant."
Treat your wife as your PARTNER - she is your PARTNER. God gave her to you to partner with you to do His will, not to be your slave to do your bidding and stop living her own life.
You are to partner together: put heads together and work together to actualize the plan God has for uniting you both in marriage.
Don't look down on your wife because she is perhaps illiterate. The last time I checked, an illiterate is someone who has little or no education; or someone who knows little or nothing about a PARTICULAR subject; or someone who is unable to read or write. So going by these definitions, an illiterate is not a dummy who knows absolutely NOTHING, neither is an illiterate a foolish person.
So, your wife may be illiterate but she definitely knows something you don't know; she possess knowledge that can be beneficial to you and the family, so don't relegate her to the background - draw from the knowledge and wisdom she possess.
Don't also look down on your wife and treat her unfairly because she is a house wife or she's unable to contribute large figures of money in meeting the financial and material needs of the home.
Treat your wife well; see her as your partner just as God Almighty calls her your partner, and the blessings God has already released upon the work of your hands will manifest physically.
